I'm living in a students' hotel and the bandwith for my torrent traffic recently has been limited. How is it possible to detect torrent traffic while it is completely encrypted and the port is also randomized everytime my client starts?

The limit only affects my torrent traffic, the rest of the (web, ssh, etc.) are still fine. I have access to the wifi router (since the credentials are the factory default...), but of course it's a part of a greater network, this one only serves ppl on my floor. Can I perhaps take advantage of the router somehow to overcome this limitation? It's a NetGear WGR614v9 which is a very lame router by the way.

Highly off topic. Not only is this unrelated to systems administration, you also seem to be asking about how to circumvent network controls using what is almost certainly unauthorized access to network equipment someone else owns. It's a cat and mouse game. There is very sofisticated hard and software to detect any kind of traffic, even if it is encrypted. There are many passible ways to analyze it.

I once saw a talk from the Tor network makers and their protocol was spotted by a single number that was always in the handshake.

To circumvent these measures you'd need to route your traffic through an encrypted tunnel to an endpoint that doesn't mind your bittorrent traffic.

A VPN service might be an idea.

I believe the handshaking at the start of the encrypted connection may give it away, as well as the use of ports other than the normal SSL ports. It's also possible to probabilistically spot torrents simply by the distribution of packet sizes.

A popular way round this is to buy a VPN link to somewhere else and route the torrent traffic down that.
