I'm trying to get thin to run on port 80 with this command:

rvmsudo thin start -R server.ru -p 80

it runs just fine if I connect to the server from a machine on the local network, but not from an external network.

Before anyone says that I should check if ports are forwarded or my isp allows port 80, I'll say that nginx runs on port 80 just fine, and when i use a port like 3000 for thin, it is accessible from outside my network.

Is there something I'm missing?

Is thin listening only on the local interface? Run sudo netstat -antp and find the thin process. Make sure the local IP is something like "0.0.0.0:80". –  cjc Jul 16 '12 at 18:19

Do you see packets from external addresses if you run tcpdump -qn port 80? –  Zoredache Jul 16 '12 at 18:29
