Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I've just bought a new dedicated server and I wanted to install the basic services on it, but when I tried to install php after updating my ports I get the following error message (after PHP's configuring is done).

checking for readline in -ledit... no
** Cannot --enable-pcretest-libedit because libedit library was not found.
===>  Script "configure" failed unexpectedly.
Please report the problem to mm@FreeBSD.org [maintainer] and attach the
"/usr/ports/devel/pcre/work/pcre-8.31/config.log" including the output of the
failure of your make command. Also, it might be a good idea to provide an
overview of all packages installed on your system (e.g. an `ls /var/db/pkg`).
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/ports/devel/pcre.
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/ports/devel/pcre.
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/ports/lang/php5.
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/ports/lang/php5.

And it seems that I have the libedit library installed properly:

# locate libedit

It happends when I want to install PHP, Lighttpd or even MySQL, how can I solve that?

In first, try to install pcre separately, doing it step-by-step: cd /usr/ports/devel/pcre; make deinstall clean; make rmconfig; make patch; make; make install –  hangover Jul 18 '12 at 3:22
