I was hosted on dedicated server for about £500 a month, then I moved to colo for £200 a month and now I am finally moving the server from colo to my home internet. The servers with hosting companies are way underpowered for the prices. My servers constantly crashed due to high processing loads (not high bandwidth usage) and I have had enough of the bitter taste.
Loss of earnings due to downtime: Atleast 2 hours per week * 4 weeks in a month = 8 hours per month ||||| 8hrs * £10 = £80 per month, so total server cost = £580 for dedicated server and £280 for colo

Servers at home
I have four servers at home with exactly the same configuration as above. I plan to upgrade to RAID 5 (only 4 bays in my server) on all the servers. Then use second server as the database server, 1 server as the background processing and queue/job handling server for data collection and generation and uploading that to the database server. Use the third server for serving dynamic files and static files. Fourth server for backup, testing, general usage, staging, possible redundancy, config testing, etc..
I have setup DNS with namecheap for all my domains and I have also used their DDNS to automatically update the ip addresses.
I have forwarded the route for the incoming HTTP & HTTPS connections to the server. I am on BT Infinity Fibre Broadband so the speed is rarely slow even during the peak times. I have about 25 incoming visitors (100-500 httpd requests) per second at maximum (60Mbps uplink usage at the peak times). However, I can now compress the content more, resize the images, optimise the html since I have three servers at home.
**Additional Info: **I can get an additional 20Mb upload line (16Mb actual upload speed) for an additional £30 a month
PS: I am not hosting any thing very important, . However, I am making a lot through advertising (5 million visitors a month, 25 million pageviews a month) ~Average £10/hr. I don't mind a bit of downtime (A loss of upto £200 is bearable), so essentially a downtime of upto 20hrs a month is acceptable.
Current Costs: £10 line + £26 fibe broadband = £36 a month for a 20Mb upload line (Dynamic IP)
If I want to upgrade to two lines then the cost would double to £72 a month 40Mbps

- Possibly get a 1&1 dedicated server for £29 a month where I can host the files for faster serving. Then create a mirror of the media files over there and use it as a cdn.
Why go through all the trouble I think that I would be making potential minimum savings of £280 - £200(acceptable down time) £80. This can go up to £280 if there is no downtime at all on servers at home. This is quite considerable over a year as it adds up to £960 to £3360 of savings.
- Are there any downfalls to this setup? Is expansion through the proposed solutions of additional lines and external file hosting reliable and/or feasible?
- Any reason I should go back to hosting it in a colo or somewhere else?
- Is paying extra for static IPs justifiable? How long are the downtimes/propagation times in updating the DDNS records (I have set the setting to 15 minutes for autoupdate the DDNS) when ip changes in dynamic IP? Does the complexity of setting static ip outweigh its use?
- Is hosting the processing parts of the server at home with/without Static IPs and using external server for fileserver (possibly with nginx) a viable option?
Note: Please give me your advice on what else could I do! BTW, I am Comp Sci student at uni (2nd year). I really expect to get some answers here as I spent about an hour writing this question. Please don't close it as being too long.
