Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have had trouble deploying L2TP+IPSEC on Linux; my server is running kernel 2.6.38.

But my problem is this --

Sometimes my Mac and iPhone won't reconnect after disconnecting. This was supposed to be fixed in the latest OpenSwan update. After updating, the throughput of my server went down to 600KB/sec (on a 100mbit uplink!).

How do people even use Linux for VPN services? Are there any alternatives?

My hosting doesn't support OpenBSD/FreeBSD unfortunately.

Before I post the solution. I wanted to know if you are configuring the VPN server on a physical box at your home or remote webhosting ? –  Chakri Jul 27 '12 at 12:35

It's remote hosting. Dedicated server without a firewall. But it doesn't matter, I am wondering about the state of VPN servers (software). –  gilm Jul 27 '12 at 14:49
