Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Very strange. I am on media temple dv, and for some reason when I go to a subdomain that doesn't exist for any of my sites it redirects to another site.

Is there a way for me to correct this in plesk? (or Mediatemple)? Really would like things to just 404 if they don't exist. It's embarassing when someone gives a typo for one of the subdomains and the website they get is totally unrelated.

Sounds like MT are doing something dodgy. Contact their support and tell 'em to knock it off. –  womble Jul 28 '12 at 7:07
I'm troubleshooting the same issue. Have you discovered a solution yet? Will post if I find one. –  kscotbarr Jul 30 '12 at 20:00
Do you have wildcard subdomain (*.subdomain.com) configured maybe? –  Sergey L Aug 15 '12 at 5:10

Sounds like the DNS server that is authoritative for your domain, is configured to redirect web traffic to non-existing web servers (subdomain) to some sort of default webpage (i.e. address)
