Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

The ubuntu mainline faq states:

By definition the mainline kernel builds are made from virgin unaltered mainline kernel sources and therefore do not, and should not, include any Ubuntu patches or drivers. There are also no binary drivers for these kernels.

Where do I find sources (or binaries) for the most basic drivers, like for example b44 and iwl3945?

The typical answer to this question is the same as on Windows -- contact your hardware vendor to see if they supply drivers. If your vendor does not supply drivers you may get better advice on AskUbuntu – voretaq7 Aug 18 '12 at 6:16
