Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

So the scenario I am facing is where I had an old SBS 2003 server. I used Outlook to export emails to a PST, saved on a USB and then imported them back into the new SBS 2011 server (two different physical boxes).

We have now destroyed the old box and I have just realized i forgot to export an old, very small email account. I have an image of the old server (using Backup Exec System recovery) and am basically wondering if, and how, i would be able to mount the Exchange 2003 database file from backup into my Exchange 2010 on SBS 2011 and then copy over the one mailbox.

Is this possible? If so, how?

Why not restore the server from the image and export the mailbox? If that's not possible then you'll have to use a third party tool to export the email from the mailbox database file. –  joeqwerty Aug 20 '12 at 14:25
I wanted to avoid this as it seemed more hassle than its worth (i'm only really interested in one email from this mailbox). Could you recommend any tools to extract emails / PSTs directly from an edb? –  rwb Aug 21 '12 at 8:17
This is the only one I'm aware of: krollontrack.com/data-recovery/e-mail-recovery-software. I've never used it but I understand that it's fairly expensive. –  joeqwerty Aug 21 '12 at 13:18

this is not possible. you will need to install Exchange 2003 somewhere to restore the mailbox.

I understand your problem and I would recommend you to use a third party tool which has the ability of not only extracting the BKF files from the backup using the backup extractor but this tool also sufficiently migrate these to the new Exchange Server 2010 from the Exchange Server 2003 environment.

Can you recommend a specific tool? –  Dan Feb 22 '13 at 13:45

Step by step guide to export exchange server mailbox to higher version. http://exchangeserverstips.wordpress.com/2013/12/16/steps-to-move-exchange-server-mailbox-to-higher-version/

You cannot do this with the native Exchange / Windows Tools supplied by Microsoft. You can restore the BESR image, and the export the mailbox from the .EDB to .PST using this tool from Nucleus Tech. http://www.nucleustechnologies.com/Exchange-Server-Data-Recovery.html

You can view the PST file using the free version.
