We recently had to restart our virtual hosts and in doing so, exposed a problem with a Domain Controller.
We have two Domain Controllers, Windows Server 2008 R2, and also use Exchange.
When DC1 boots up, the netlogon service is initially paused and the Windows time service fails as a result. I've started the services to keep things moving, and on investigation, the AD replication between DC1 and DC2 isn't working.
Our Exchange server is dependent on DC1 (presumably), as it has all the operations master roles. I'm thinking of trying to change the operations master to DC2 and see if that improves the situation. The problem appears to be with DC1, and I'm not really sure how or if it can be resolved.
Following negative feedback I'll try and elaborate.
The first problem, as I see it, is that the netlogon service starts paused and Windows time fails to start because of this. I can manually start the services by stopping the netlogon then starting netlogon, followed by starting Windows time.
What I've found online regarding this problem is that it is typically caused by restoring a Domain Controller incorrectly. I obviously haven't restored anything but I think if I can get this problem sorted, I'll be able to start resolving the replication problem.
Does anybody know what causes this symptom or able to provide additional information on how I can debug or troubleshoot this?
