I am looking for a proxy server with failover on string detection.

I have a 3rd web application that fails and displays an error message.

Since the server is "technically" up DNS failover doesn't work - nor can I find anything in Nginx, Squid, Pound, Delegate or Apache.

I need something that detects a string and then fails over.

My team and I have spent about 35 hours trying to get varnish polling to work and I am not going done that road again.

Anything else before I roll up my sleeves and roll my own?

NOTE - I have no control over root issue all I can do is wrap something around it to make it suck less.

You have unstable app, and looking for dynamic switching, this is rather difficult, and I dont think it's a standard usage scenario at the load balancer level. However you can try to fix the app to be stable, by strace, or whatsoever to resolve the root issue. –  Andrew Smith Aug 28 '12 at 23:30

This is the spec - proxy server with failover on string detection. I can't change the spec. I can't change the 3rd party app either. I have no control over root issue all I can do is wrap something around it to make it suck less. –  joshua paul Aug 28 '12 at 23:49

Why won't varnish polling work? Seems like the correct solution to me. –  Pax Aug 29 '12 at 14:17
