Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

This is my first question on SF.

I am new to Linux and any of its flavors for example CentOS. I don't even know about its file system. Actually I am programmer not an System Admin.

My client recently purchased a VPS account on dailyrazor.com. They provided me with root access through SSH and suggest I use PuTTY but the problem with me is I don't know a single command of Linux. I asked Razor to pre-install tomcat version 6.0 during VPS setup. They installed it also but on usr/local folder. Now I want this tomcat installed in my home folder.

Can someone tell me how to use WinSCP, a very good software through which I can see the whole directory structure, and can use Linux like I am using Windows. I want to install tomcat in my home folder so I can operate it from file manager in control panel but I don't know how to install / unintsall any software on this Linux OS.

So my question is, is there any GUI tool / application from which I can connect to the server and operate it like I am operating Windows, at least to accomplish my above stated goal?

For example like in WinSCP, I can install/un install application on my server?

Or please advise how I can accomplish my above stated goal.

If you don't have access to the server's desktop (which would normally be the case it being a server and all) then you should take a look at Cpanel and Plesk. As serverfault is for professional sysadmins we would normally expect people using the site to have some understanding of the OS that they are working with. You don't fit that demographic and really do need to get yourself some Linux education. A Q&A site isn't the place for that. – Iain Sep 21 '12 at 7:15

You may install ubuntu or centos with graphical interface and try to access that interface with vnc-viewer but still you need to have understanding of the Linux operating system.

Have you ever actually tried to install Linux on a VPS using the graphical interface? – John Gardeniers Sep 21 '12 at 7:09
I did not said to install Linux on a VPS with graphical interface but I am just giving him a hint that its not possible without knowing Linux system. – Toqeer Sep 21 '12 at 7:28
Maybe you should read the question again. – John Gardeniers Sep 21 '12 at 12:50
