I am migrating a Solaris server to Linux and configuring the users in the Linux server Application level.

I could see the user entries in /etc/passwd in Solaris but in Linux it is configured as soft links in /home/generic directory. I am wondering how exactly this will work.

I wish to configure all the users and FTP users in such a way that

  • All the users will land in their respective home directory in /home/generic
  • If the home directory is not defined I want to redirect those users to /home/generic/share

Where I could find these configurations in Linux. Any documents will be of great help

I don't quite follow what you are asking here. –  Zoredache Sep 26 '12 at 16:32
@Zoredache I think he just wants to setup FTP with anonymous users landing in /home/generic/share. –  Aaron Copley Sep 26 '12 at 16:39
OP, what FTP server software are you using? This information would be critical to the answer. –  Aaron Copley Sep 26 '12 at 16:40
@AaronCopley, Hrm.. It almost sounded like he wanted something like a Windows Mandatory Profile. –  Zoredache Sep 26 '12 at 16:42
@Zoredache You got me, then. I'm just going on the bulleted list and the sentence preceding the bullets. The rest doesn't seem to apply to any problem he's trying to solve. –  Aaron Copley Sep 26 '12 at 16:44
