Check the file's permission with ls -l. What do you see? It could be r--r--r--. –  ott-- Oct 3 '12 at 21:22

/dev/root on / type ext3 (ro,data=ordered) it seems read only permission –  user133916 Oct 3 '12 at 21:30

Is the system a livecd or soemthing? Or is this a VM of some sort? –  Zoredache Oct 3 '12 at 21:51

@user133916, please use appropriate punctuation, without which your questions is just gibberish. I'd edit it myself but can't work out where one sentence starts and another begins. –  John Gardeniers Oct 3 '12 at 22:50
