On a VMWare ESXi 4.1 server I have a virtual machine with Windows XP. The virtual disk is thick provisioned. The Virtual Machine Version is 7. I have checked that there are no snapshots and I powered down the VM but I still can't change the Provisioned Size of the disk.

What kind of disk controller is the VM using? –  Shane Madden Oct 26 '12 at 19:17
IDE, the windows guest recognizes it as an Intel 82371AB/EB –  Eelke Oct 27 '12 at 4:25
What type is displayed in the edit settings dialog of the VM? –  Shane Madden Oct 27 '12 at 4:28
vSphere client lists the devices simply as IDE0 and IDE1 with in the summary column the text "(No Settings)". It doesn't list a type like it does for the SCSI controllers on the other (Linux) VMs. –  Eelke Oct 27 '12 at 4:40
