I am trying to install Tomcat to use Solr on my server running Centos 5.8 but am running into problems with the Java component - I have installed Java and confirmed it is installed:

java version "1.6.0_22"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.10.10) (rhel-1.28.1.10.10.el5_8-x86_64)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b11, mixed mode)

I have then unpacked Tomcat etc and set it up as a service but when I start the service I get an error in logs/catalina.out:

/usr/share/apache-tomcat-7.0.32-src/bin/catalina.sh: line 389: /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0.openjdk.x86_64/bin/java: No such file or directory

In /etc/init.d/tomcat I have a line which points to the JAVA_HOME which is set to:

JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0.openjdk.x86_64

When I look at that directory there is a folder called bin and then a file called java with in it so it all looks OK but when I try to start the service I get the errors shown the log file above - can anyone help to resolve this?

Is your application (initscript, catalina.sh) using chroot(8) somewhere? –  pkhamre Oct 26 '12 at 8:48

Also, check the permissions for the files directories you have mentioned. Do the user trying to start up Tomcat got read + execute permissions? –  pkhamre Oct 26 '12 at 8:49

I created a user called tomcat and a group called tomcat - I set the owner and group for the service and apache-tomcat-7.0.32-src plus the files within to tomcat so I don't anything is set to root only though I am FAR from an expert. If I try to start tomcat using root or the user tomcat I get the same thing as above –  bhttoan Oct 26 '12 at 9:30

@Jason Could you please post the output of ls -lad /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0.openjdk.x86_64 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0.openjdk.x86_64/bin and ls -la /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0.openjdk.x86_64/bin/java This may help to fix the problem. –  xhochy Oct 26 '12 at 12:01
