I have a vps running my websites. I configured my websites to use fastcgi so in proccesses I see:

28696 mywebsite 20 0 152m 12m 6460 S 0 2.5 0:00.31 php5-cgi

this is normal. but I also see lot of following prccess eat RAM:

28522 www-data 20 0 241m 21m 3108 D 4 4.2 0:00.07 apache2

but I have not configured any website to use (run as) apache2 module and under www-data user group.

where these proccesses came from?

which webserver are you using? if apache, then it's normal (and expected) for the process apache2 to run. –  mulaz Nov 1 '12 at 16:59

I use apache2 webserver but no website configured to use www-data group. is it normal then? –  m3hdi Nov 1 '12 at 17:03

Apache runs as www-data by default in Ubuntu. –  ceejayoz Nov 1 '12 at 17:13

You can probably make Apache use less RAM by choosing either the worker or the event MPM rather than the prefork MPM which I suspect you are using. Alternatives such as nginx can also use less RAM compared to Apache in prefork mode. –  Ladadadada Nov 1 '12 at 17:16

how can I change it from prefork to worker? (it is debian) –  m3hdi Nov 1 '12 at 17:55
