I'm trying to create a snapshot of an 8GB volume attached to another instance whose device is named sdh5. I originally created this volume myself and mounted it as an ext4 filesystem. Now I'm trying to create a snapshot of this volume, but it's just simply not working. AWS provides me no feedback on why it's not working... it just simply does not show up in my list of snapshots. I tried it both from the UI and from the command line, in both cases it's not telling me what went wrong. Any ideas?

In what region are you trying to create the snapshot? You need to make sure that you always specify that region when looking at the list of snapshots. –  Eric Hammond Nov 3 '12 at 23:29

@EricHammond why? the volume is in us-east-1b. –  Justin Meltzer Nov 3 '12 at 23:58

BTW, it's only creating snapshots for the root device and not for any other volumes... –  Justin Meltzer Nov 4 '12 at 0:01

What command are you using to create the snapshot? –  Eric Hammond Nov 4 '12 at 4:38

ec2-create-snapshot -d <description> <volume-id> –  Justin Meltzer Nov 4 '12 at 7:20
