Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am getting started with a Virtual Private Server using Plesk 11 - and it is requesting a "Full Hostname" - and I am a bit confused. Does this need to resolve to an actual domain, or is it just an internal value used by Windows/Plesk?

If you have a virtual private server at a hoster, the server should have an address. This address can be something like server1.host.com. You should take a look at your hosting data.

It just gives me a kind of dummy domain that doesn't resolve to anything, as the default. I'm wondering if I need to change it to a domain that is actually registered, is the problem. –  Ciel Nov 24 '12 at 23:18

You need this address for outgoing mail and other Plesk stuff. How does this "dummy domain" look like? I think it doesn't have to resolve a website, it just has to match to the server IP. –  TIIUNDER Nov 24 '12 at 23:24

[servername].secureserver.net - I have no idea what 'secureserver.net' is. –  Ciel Nov 24 '12 at 23:54

I think, this domain should work. I also have a strange [server].onlinehome-server.info domain. –  TIIUNDER Nov 24 '12 at 23:56
