I've got a problem with an old dell poweredge 2950 installing debian squeeze. The raid controller is setting up the volume group as /dev/sdb.

During the installation process grub wants to be installed on /dev/sda, which is not available in the system.

I tried to install grub manually via

> apt-get install grub
> grub-install /dev/sdb
> update-grub
> grub-install /dev/sdb

which always outputs done - no errors. But when I reboot, the system is not loading - instead I get the grub console saying

grub >

Any ideas how I can get the volume group to be /dev/sda or to install grub correctly?

thanks!

Please post the output of dmesg | grep sda. I find it rather curious that there would be nothing at sda but something at sdb. –  Michael Kjörling Dec 7 '12 at 15:18

grub-install /dev/sdb –  Michael Hampton Dec 7 '12 at 16:24

I was using grub-install /dev/sdb - just forgot to write it here at first –  Dan Dec 7 '12 at 18:19
