When I view server status in MySQL workbench I found out that there are a large number of proceeses with command "sleep". No active query is going on and I fear would it be the case that I misconfigure anything. I access the database with php mainly. How can I prevent this to happen, i.e. automatically kill the process when no one is using?

Please post the result of SELECT VERSION(); and SHOW PROCESSLIST; in your question. –  RolandoMySQLDBA Dec 18 '12 at 17:14
Are you using tcp/ip or a unix socket for connecting to the mysql server? Why not use netstat, or lsof and and figure out what is actually connecting to the mysql server? –  Zoredache Dec 18 '12 at 18:39
