I have one email address on a multiple domain qmail server that is getting bounce messages every minute or two. For example:
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mail01.XXXXXX.net. I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out. <MAILER-DAEMON@mail01.XXXXXX.net>: Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.1.1) --- Enclosed are the original headers of the message. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Sherry <email@example.com> To: <MAILER-DAEMON@mail01.XXXXXX.net> Cc: Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2012 23:46:46 -0500 Subject: Re: failure notice (Body supressed)
looking in the maillog I see:
Dec 27 23:36:44 mail01 in: firstname.lastname@example.org|MAILER-DAEMON@mail01.XXXXXX.net|738|success|1 Dec 27 23:37:45 mail01 out: 1356669465|pop3@email@example.com|1615|success|1
I have a /var/qmail/control/doublebounceto file created, but it does not seem to matter. This may be a characteristic of backscatter, but from the message it appears it was trying to deliver to the mail server. Could this be a message stuck in some queue? I've cleared the qmail queue and did not notice anything suspicious in it.
