Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am using an Ubuntu 10.04.4 with Plesk 11 installed.

My customer has a lot of domains, each one found under /var/www/vhosts/ and for each one an FTP user exists.

I want to give my customer a single FTP user account, with which he will be able to upload data to any directory under /var/www/vhosts.

Of course, newly created files should be created as the user to which the domain belongs.

I created a config in /etc/proftpd.include:

<Directory /var/www/vhosts/DOMAINNAME/httpdocs/>
    UserOwner DOMAINUSER
    GroupOwner psaserv
    umask 002

This should keep the correct user and owner on newly created files. However, this doesn't work for me.

The new master FTP User is able to login via FTP and I can see all directories under /var/www/vhosts. But whenever I try to upload a file, I get a "Permission Denied" error in the FTP programm.

How can I configure a master FTP user? Where can I see logs of the proftpd server for this error? (I only see in syslog, that a ftp user logged in.)
