Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have tried to use yum but it didn't work. I am doong this to experiment with magento for a client and this is a dependency. All of my searches have started to get me more confused than anything. I am more a front end developer than backend but I need to start to do more of this. I am getting used to the command line and find it ok just some core concepts missing for me.

Thanks for any advice - I have looked through all similar on this site to no avail.

What OS? Where have you installed PHP from? –  mgorven Feb 12 '13 at 17:49
yum search mcrypt | grep php should show you which package to install. Make sure you restart your web server after installing. –  ceejayoz Feb 12 '13 at 17:54
