i have a kvm host based on ubuntu 10.04 host , and also the guest is ubuntu 10.04 64-bit,

guest's network adapter is e1000
on the guest i tried to execute mii-tool eth4

SIOCGMIIREG on eth4 failed: Input/output error
SIOCGMIIREG on eth4 failed: Input/output error
SIOCGMIIREG on eth4 failed: Input/output error
eth4: autonegotiation failed, link ok

and mii-tool -v eth4

eth4: autonegotiation failed, link ok
product info: Yukon 88E1011 rev 0
basic mode: software reset, autonegotiation enabled
basic status: autonegotiation complete, link ok
  capabilities: 1000baseT-FD 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx-HD 10baseT-FD 10baseT-HD
  advertising: flow-control
  link partner: 1000baseT-FD 100baseTx-FD 100baseTx-HD 10baseT-FD 10baseT-HD

this is output /var/log/message

Feb 20 13:16:09 xil1 kernel: [ 1254.490796] e1000: eth4 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: RX
Feb 20 13:16:44 xil1 kernel: [ 1289.790780] e1000: eth4 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: RX

so that it is supposed to work with 1000MB/s but it still working with 100MB/s any suggestion what may be the problem ?

Why don't you switch to virtio? –  Michael Hampton Feb 20 '13 at 18:56

@MichaelHampton switching to virtio result the same network speed , and moreover the dmesg |grep -i "eth*" don't recongize the virtio driver although the virtio drivers are loaded. –  Moaz Refat Feb 21 '13 at 8:41
