Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I currently have one server which is a mysql server. I want to get the data from it, into a new 3 node percona xtradb cluster i've set up.

I am wondering if there's any alternatives to simply doing a mysqldump for getting the data from one to the other.

My ideas so far have been:

  • Set up the mysql server with cluster software, make it the master node, then set up extra nodes, and let the data transfer that way - i'm not sure if this concept will work

  • Copy the raw mysql data files across to one of the nodes - does the cluster then detect these changes and propogate it throughout the other nodes

What is the best way? I need to try to avoid downtime as much as possible, and the servers can be changing state fairly frequently.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Quanta, the best answers are usually the simplest. I feel like i've read the first one already, not sure why it didn't dawn on me at the time! –  GoldieNZ Feb 21 '13 at 18:54
