I'm currently in charge of a network consisting of around 15 computers. Pretty much all machines are different from each other, from distributions to installed software and settings. I was playing with the idea of having a PXE bootable image on our server, so by simply restarting the clients every once in a while, they would all be up to the same "standard". I've been able to get a PXE boot to work on a virtual server - virtual client setup. I am still unsure if it is possible/feasible to update a custom image (say once a week) that would be used as the PXE boot image. In this image I would want to embed common settings, scripts and packages to be installed. To my understanding some of this can be done through preseeding, but not all.
Has anyone dealt with this in an efficient manner? Can I access a base linux image and append operations? Or would it be easier to have a reference machine, that I update and rebuild an image from?
Any input would be appreciated!
