The host would need to have port 2195 open and support push notifications under apns. I have had some trouble finding a hosting service that would support this.

Define "affordable". Plenty of hosting companies will work with you to make things like this work, but they're mostly not the "30c per decade" places that have no margins for technical support people. – womble Aug 2 '09 at 21:42
I was looking for somewhere around 20 bucks a month for unlimited messages, but am flexible depending on the type of plan. – dr_pepper Aug 3 '09 at 12:13

You can take a look on Bigcurl HTTPPush : http://www.httpush.com/ Or Urban Airship : http://urbanairship.com/push/

They offer simple APIs to send push notifications (it should ease your development effort - you won't have to implement the full APNS specifications ;))

Why not get your self a VPS, they can usually be spec'd to your budget and will allow you to control what you let in and out.

yeah, a VPS should do the trick! You'll never find that as a dedicadet service. There isn't an adequate market for it. – Martin K. Aug 2 '09 at 19:32
Good advice, I found a minimal VPS service for $20/month, does that pricing seem on par with the services you know about? – dr_pepper Aug 2 '09 at 19:40
