Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

After installing Proftpd (during the installation of Virtualmin) on Ubuntu 12.04, I added a new user using useradd newUsername.

Problem: Users created before the installation of proftpd were able to access the FTP server, but not the users created after installing proftpd.

The FTP client reports 530 Login incorrect. proftpd log says:

FTP session opened.
testuser chdir("/home/testuser"): No such file or directory
FTP session closed.

Why is this so? How can we solve the problem?

What do the logs say? –  slimsuperhero Apr 3 '13 at 5:18
@slimsuperhero the ftp log says No such file or directory. Looks like useradd did not create the user home directory? –  Nyxynyx Apr 3 '13 at 5:21
What homedir and shell does the newly created user have? –  slimsuperhero Apr 3 '13 at 5:22
@slimsuperhero The user can now log in after recreating it with the -m flag to create its home directory! Thanks :) –  Nyxynyx Apr 3 '13 at 5:37
