I have an LVM2 logical volume that is formatted with ext4 and mounted to a directory on /opt. On that volume is a qcow2 KVM image for a Windows 7 guest. Can I snapshot the LVM logical volume for a complete backup/clone of the VM? I believe this is usually done with raw images that use the entire logical volume as opposed to having an image live on the volume, but this is the way it was configured. If not, what is the simplest way to get clones/snapshots of this qcow2 VM? There is not enough space on the same logical volume so I would like to store them on /opt/data.
Cent 6.3 libvirt 0.10.2
So I did some reading and I think I understand the concept now.. tell me if this is right please:
I can add another usb disk for backup storage and create a logical vol snapshot with lvcreate of the logical vol where the qcow2 file is stored (this can be done while the VM is running). I would then mount that newly created snapshot logical volume and then tar the qcow2 file and perhaps the xml file and then back that tar file up to tape or store it on disk, and then delete the LVM snapshot. Is this correct procedure?
