I am considering deploying a SAN but I have found contradictory information.

The thing is that I would like my cluster nodes to be able to read the same data from a unique source (I have a configuration file hierarchy where cluster nodes come to fetch the data they need for their computation). I thought a SAN would do the trick (a NAS may be a bottleneck). SAN over ICSI with a dedicated network for data sharing. (I was thinking about Dell EqualLogic Product).

However, it seems that the SAN could not be shared unless I deploy a clustered file system (like GFS). Am I correct? And is this coherent with the kind of usage I want ?

I was incapable of understanding whether FluidFs was a clustered file system. They kind of mix SAN and NAS in a way I do not really understand.

I don't think a clustered file system is appropriate. A SAN is a block of storage that you can break up into LUNs. These LUNs can be made available to a computer as a logical drive with iSCSI. Your computer's OS would format the drive with whatever file system it can use. It looks like FluidFs is just Dell's OS for their NAS (a computer that only serves storage). –  Edwin Apr 16 '13 at 10:20

I think the argument is that using iSCSI in this scenario is needlessly complex. You need a shared file system for the servers so that they can access the same configuration and data sets. Use a NAS or a SMB/CIFS share. Using iSCSI means having to implement iSCSI and a clustered file system, which seems like overkill for this need. –  joeqwerty Apr 17 '13 at 4:35
