Preface to the problem, we have a LaCie 5Big Network (not Network2) which Mountain Lion machines can't connect to. I thought I would try to configure a VM to mount the AFP share that the 5Big provides, and then share over netatalk using Ubuntu software rather than the NAS's built-in (broken) stuff. It's got a ton of space (6TB) that I'd like to salvage.

Ubuntu 13.04 installed, I've successfully:

  • installed netatalk and avahi
  • configured my /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default to contain /mnt/backup "Office Backup VM" cnidscheme:dbd ea:sys options:usedots,upriv,tm allow:timemachine
  • have added user timemachine
  • have created /mnt/backup owned by timemachine:timemachine, chmod 777

At that point, issuing sudo service netatalk restart starts the service successfully, and I can run TM on this share without issue.

Here's where I start to meander....

I shutdown netatalk, clear /mnt/backup, have installed mount_afp, and can successfully run:

sudo mount_afp afp://user:pass@ /mnt/backup

Before this command is executed, the DIR listing is:

drwxrwxrwx 2 timemachine timemachine 4096 ... backup

After I run it, it goes to:

d????????? ? ? ? ? backup

If I issue: sudo ls -l backup I can see its contents.

I restart netatalk, seemingly without incident. Attempting to connect to TM from a Mac on the same network yields:

The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 2.)

Any ideas?

Is AFP the only protocol the LaCie 5Big Network support? If I were you, I'd mount it using NFS on the Ubuntu machine and re-export using netatalk. – ptman May 5 '13 at 9:02
Wasn't able to use NFS, but, I did get a bit farther with CIFS. Strangely enough, I now see the machine name.tmp.sparsebundle get created with a bunch of other files, unfortunately the TM client on the desktop computer side reports an error 13 (permissions). One step closer... – Saeven May 6 '13 at 19:15
