I am on Linux Mint. I have compiled and installed Samba4 from source and joined a Samba4 DC I have elsewhere on my network. I have also been trying to get Samba/winbind to work with PAM to authenticate locally using AD users. When I run pam-auth-update, I don't have the Winbind Active Directory option available in the pam-auth-update menu. However, if I apt-get install the winbind package, it DOES shows up as an option in pam-auth-update.
I want to either get the Winbind option to show up in pam-auth-update as the COMPILED winbind module, or get my compiled Samba4 install to play nice with the winbind APT package. At this point I get different results if I'm running
wbinfo -u from the /usr/local binary vs the Winbind package version of wbinfo. I don't know which is better -- seems like I need to stick with the fully compiled binaries and configure PAM but I refuse to manually modify the pam.d files at this point, considering I've already hosed my system multiple times that way.
So, assuming it's better to go with the compiled solution and remove the winbind package, how do I get PAM to see the compiled installation of winbind using pam-auth-update?
(Or, is there a yet newer method of doing all this that I don't know about yet?)
