I've tried to find some info on this and reading the source, but couldn't really figure it out.

At work we have a bunch of machines with a lot of cores and memory, which we run computations on.

Sometimes the resident and virtual memory tabs lights up red for these processes, but I've never figured out why.

Anybody got an idea? At first I figured it meant they hit the memory ceiling, but they don't.
