I have just set up a new server, RedHat Enterprise Linux 6 on an HP blade. I have no trouble logging in over ssh, or on the console in runlevel 3, but cannot log in with the Gnome desktop. There is a pause, then I return to the login screen. In /var/log/messages, I find

Jul 11 14:03:36 815-sts-32 spice-vdagent[2855]: Missing virtio device '/dev/virtio-ports/com.redhat.spice.0': No such file or directory

Indeed there is no such device; however, on another machine, also RH6, I log in to Gnome with no problem. As far as I can tell, the virtio item is for running guest VMs on Linux, which I am not trying to do.

Two factors, possibly relevant, possibly not:

  • The new machine has 256 GB of memory, the old one 8 GB.
  • The old machine runs under VMWare, the new, as I said, right on the blade server.

Thoughts, anyone?

Check the logs, of course. /var/log/messages, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and $HOME/.xsession-errors for a start. – Michael Hampton Jul 12 '13 at 18:01
There is nothing useful in Xorg.0.log, there is no .xsession-errors file, and the information in /var/log/messages is what I quoted above – George Jul 12 '13 at 20:22
I presume that you re-installed the OS and did not migrate the install from the old to the new in some way? – Daniel Widrick Jul 13 '13 at 3:05
