I was wondering if anyone had any specific experience using Intel DC3700 SSDs (or similar) in the HP (DL380p) Gen8 servers?

I'm upgrading a set of database servers that use direct-attached storage. Typically, we use HP-branded everything in our server configs, and beyond a few SSD'd desktops (all of which have worked flawlessly), I have not otherwise used SSDs - certainly not in a server.

The servers we're upgrading run SQL Server (2005) on Windows. We're moving to SQL 2012. Current boxes host a single 200GB database on DL370 G6 provisioned with 72GB 15K SFF drives in RAID 1+0 as follows: OS (2 spindles), tempdb (4 spindles), t-logs (8 spindles), data (20 spindles). Performance is not an issue (CPU load is typically 20% / peak 30%, disk queues are typ = 1). The data volume disks are running in MSA50s off a P800 - so there's probably 5K IOPS there tops. The hardware is approaching 4 years old, and so it's time for a refresh.

Data usage, as reported by the individual hard disks, shows write volume of < 100TB since deployment on the data volume; < 10TB write on the transaction log volume; and ~ 1TB on tempdb.

That's the use case. Now consider a new, identical disk subsystem. It's going to run ~ $15K per server (34x 15K HDD @ $250 + 2x D2700 shelf + Smart array P421 for the external storage).

Consider a similar SSD deployment, say 6x 200GB SSD for the data volume, and 2 each (100GB) for OS, tempdb, and logging. Perhaps overkill, but using Intel DC S3700 for all with a second array card brings me in around $5K per server. Plus, it fits in one 2U box (use the expansion cage on the DL380p) and saves several hundred dollars in electricity every year. With the increased SSD performance, this might even cover some sloppy queries ;-).

An equivalent "no-worries" HP SSD solution is going to run ~ $10.5K. Twice the price with less warranty, lower endurance, but guaranteed performance and manageability.

Certainly, there are loads of in-between solutions that could work. I'm also quite aware of the vendor supported solution vs. 3rd party trade-offs. What I don't have is experience integrating these specific products to help quantify those trade-offs. I'm hoping someone out there does, and is willing to share his experience.

Questions that come to my mind are:

Does the S3700 play well in the Proliant environment with the Array P42x/P822 cards? If using the S3700, would there be an advantage to using a 3rd party card, say the LSI 9270-8i? How (well, easily) are firmware upgrades or management alerts accomplished with the third party solution as I've outlined?

If there are particular issues with the assembly, how have you worked around them - assuming you have?

With the changes that SSDs has introduced into the storage arena, storage solutions are way less straightforward than even a few years ago. I'm sure they will be very different in another few years, and we had expected to wait another cycle before seriously considering using SSDs in any server application.

Before I head too far down this road, is there anyone who would share their relevant experience with any of this? Please tell us why we're smart, crazy, or something in between.

    We get a LOT of "I'm too cheap to buy the manufacturer's supported disks" questions and they all boil down to the same answer - you may get them working, if you then good luck, but we also get a lot of people who come here boo-hoo'ing that they've lost their data-filled array a couple of years in simply because it was always a bit marginal. Basically buyer-beware.

    Doesn't matter how much you spend on SSDs when they wear out you loose data - "enterprise" ssds are slightly faster and last up to twice as long - but when they fail they fail just as badly. IMHO there's a good case for buying cheap SSDs but they have to be mirrored - and the mirror set replaced about a third of the way through the life-cycle to get a full dataset stored on disks with different wear levels.

    @symcbean: The Intel DC3700 isn't a "cheap" SSD. It uses MLC-HET (e-MLC) and can sustain 10x full capacity writes (4k 100% random w/ QD=32) per day. This is the ideal deployment scenario for it. HP's SLC SSDs will last longer (an order of magnitude longer than MLC drives), but are also overly expensive. The DC3700 will outperform HP's MLC drives in both longevity and performance. So, the move from G6 and G7 HP ProLiants to the Gen8 variants forced a disk carrier form-factor change. HP went to the SmartDrive carrier with the Gen8 product, and that's created a whole set of issues that impact SSD compatibility.

I like the idea of choosing the most appropriate options for my environments and applications, within reason. With G7's, I could use HP's SanDisk/Pliant SAS enterprise SSDs when needed, but also Intel or other low-cost SandForce-based SSDs where it made sense. If using an external enclosure like a D2700 or D2600, I could also use sTec SSDs (which offer another quality SAS SSD option). Drive carriers for the old form-factor were easily obtained.

With Gen8 servers, much of this isn't possible. From the difficult access to the SmartDrive carriers to restrictive firmware and disk validation techniques to the obscenely high price of the HP-branded SSDs ($2500+ per drive), I think HP have priced themselves out of the market.

Their rebranded drives aren't stellar performers, but have tremendous endurance. That's not needed in every environment. Getting the best performance out of HP SSDs on current HP Smart Array controller also requires tuning or even additional HP SmartPath licensing. Previous controllers like the Smart Array P410 were limited by IOPS and other constraints.

A good development that may affect your application on Gen8 servers is the HP SmartCache SSD tiering. Much like LSI's Cachecade, this allows you to add SSD read caching and benefit from lower latencies where it matters. Also see: How effective is LSI CacheCade SSD storage tiering?

In general, I'm not concerned about SSD reliability in RAID setups with disk form-factors. PCIe-based SSDs introduce other concerns. I haven't had any endurance problems, but check: Are SSD drives as reliable as mechanical drives (2013)?


So what can you do?

  • The D2700 external enclosure may be key here. It uses the older G7 disk carriers. It's also a very solid unit and compatible with old and new generation controllers. You can stuff Intel/sTec/cheapo disks in it all day and be fine. Connect that to the adapter in your hosts, and that will give you the flexibility you require. Use a DL360p instead of a DL380p to save a rack unit.

  • Intel disks inside of the Gen8 server... I wouldn't do it, if for any reason than to avoid the POST 1709 errors. Plus you'll be self-supporting in a way that impacts the main server unit. I just had a customer try to fill a 25-bay DL380p Gen8 with Intel SSDs and eBay drive carriers. He had to return the Intel drives and use low-end HP SATA disks for the system to even work.

The HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 is offered in 8-bay, 12-bay15, 16-bay and 25-bay units.

  • The 8-bay has been fine. It's a good platform, especially if you add external storage.

  • The 16-bay Gen8 has no SAS expander card (and is incompatible with the excellent HP SAS Expander), so you need two internal RAID controllers to use it. As a result, your logical drives cannot span the two 8-bay drive cages. This is a departure from the G7s, where 16-bays/disks in one array was no problem.

  • The 25-bay unit has a concerning design flaw. The SAS expander is embedded on the 25-drive backplane. This backplane requires a P420i controller with FBWC cache to function. Fine. I had three RAID controller DIMMs die in a 60-day period, though. On the 8-bay units, this just disables write cache. On the 25-bay server, a cache failure makes the Smart Array a "zero-memory" controller and disables all access to the disks!! Avoid this model unless you can accept that risk. My failure rate on 2GB cache modules is far higher than 1GB modules, so I downgrade to the 1GB modules for this specific platform.

    Showing my age here, but those Proliant post errors are throwbacks to the old Netserver L-series. You put something in that wasn't HP-branded, and it would gripe at post and warn you that you were jeopardizing your warranty, stability, and job security. There's still a lot of value in FUD.

    @ewwhite I want a great high performance server at home and would like to be able to buy good third party HDD/SSD drives. No dependency to old HP HDD’s... Perhaps other server brands are more forgiving than HP when it comes to third party HDD drives.

Here's an update to summarize my takeaways from this question. Thanks for the contributions!

It's fair to say that the original question presumes an OEM storage solution (HP SSDs in this case) provides a supported or "guaranteed" working solution in terms of component compatibility and system performance. This obviously comes at a premium price, and the perceived value informs how reasonable the premium is.

While I had really discarded the notion of using SSDs in this hardware refresh, the press on the Intel S3700, specifically, made an SSD solution attractive enough to consider. Looking at the equivalent HP products, I found (1) they aren't currently available, and (2) the expected price premium is 2.4x the Intel product. So, the question becomes how much effort would it take to integrate and validate the Intel solution? Understanding this leads to a very product-specific solution that runs counter to the aim of serverfault, so I'll generalize my thinking process using the answers provided:

  1. Whether vendor-integrated or DIY, there are still a lot of variables in hanging SSDs behind RAID controllers optimized for spinning disks. HP recommends assorted tweaks for SSD use, and the HP SmartPath software that ewwhite mentioned (Gen8 RAID + Windows only) basically short-circuits much of the RAID firmware when using SSDs. HP's additional "protectionism" with the Gen8 carriers, and managing firmware updates for 3rd party SSDs (that I would expect to be more critical than for HDDs) also makes this all just look a little too immature (or too management intensive) for prime time in a complex setup.

  2. Before I ran back to spinning disks, though, I took another look at the FusionIO product, as Tom O'Connor suggested. Since performance isn't really an issue for us, the biggest benefit is that it is an integrated storage module. That makes compatibility and configuration much more straightforward. Another important point is that HP OEMs these, so you can get "genuine" HP product in this line, and integration becomes even less an issue. Furthermore, and in stark contrast to the SATA/SAS SSDs I was considering, HP's advertised (online) prices are actually better than FusionIO's. Go figure.

Re-thinking the deployment with this post in mind, I considered building availability nodes with single FusionIO cards. This took the solution cost from "can't consider" down to "let's investigate further." Finally, when the actual quote came in at a better-than-expected level, I was sold.

So the bottom line is that we have two Gen8 servers sporting HP-branded FusionIO cards running in the sandbox. Endurance will be far beyond our expected use, the cost was lower than for a 15K SAS disk solution, and we'll substantially reduce power consumption and rack space. The redundancy model is different, sure, but the only thing I expect people will miss are all the blinking LEDs.

My original thinking regarding SSDs for a mission-critical database system was to wait a few years, as there will be many more mature and proven solutions at better price points. No doubt that will still be the case, but I was surprised to find something today that looks like it will do the job well.

  • Things are still changing. I've run out of my supply of HP Enterprise disk form-factor SSDs, and have been using the Fusion-io for high-end installs. For low-impact clients, I've still embraced PCIe-based SSD, but using inexpensive cards. This is all to get around the Gen8 protectionism built into the RAID controllers, firmware and drive carriers.

    It have now been about 5 years since you decided to use PCIe-based SSD drives in your Proliant Gen8 servers, have things changed? Are you still using Gen8 and what kind of drives are you using? I'm currently thinking on buying third party drives to be used in a old gen8 server.

I have come across this thread in my travels so to whom it may concern Rebuilt a HP ML350 Gen9 with 4x Samsung 2 TB 860's without issue the only thing is with HP is that they turn on this :

By default using SSD's HP turns on their HPE SSD Smart Path

Disable HP Smart Path in Smart Storage Administrator Select an available device from the Home screen, and then click Configure under the available options. Select a controller from the Devices menu. The Actions panel appears. Under Configure\Logical Devices, choose the array with logical drives. Click Disable HPE SSD Smart Path. Click Save.

Enable Cache in HP ROM BIOS (May be able to be set in Windows, check next one) After, Enter the cache manager in HP RAID controller Finally, enable cache option Set to 75/25 Make sure the option to use cache is disabled for when there is no battery detected

HP SSD Smart Path was also on in our ML350 Gen10 with OEM HP SSD's installed I hope this information assists someone

960 GB Intel D3 S4510 2.5" Enterprise SSD worked fine in an ML350p Gen8 - all fans working normally and no complaint from the server.

I can just say that I was lucky that by coincidence I bought a D2700 and a P822 + P830 as this solves all negative aspects on my HP DL385P Gen8 with 8 Bays. I will add 1 Cage so I end up with 16 Bays and the P830 can handle it: The HP Smart Array P830 allows you to connect a total of 16 drives spanning two separate drive cages. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/iss-controllers/product-detail.html?oid=6259422#!tab=oas The P822 attaches my Library and my D2700 so I'm covered in all ways. It's not a cheap solution that's for sure but I can tell that with this you are pretty safe.

My actual first experience:

I found (and bought) 4 "Original" HP SFF caddy tray and used 2 WD 1000GB SATA RED 2,5" and two Kingston 240GB SSD SATA (no fancy SSD just the UV400) on a brand new HP DL160 G9 with CTRL P440 with 2GB cache and battery.Both couple configured in RAID 1. No issues with a "fisical" w2008r2 installation (on SDD was like 12 minutes with the hp intelligent provisioning and a usb2 flash drive with windows setup) (no virtualziation & hypervisor) and excellent performance. No firmware issue or weird behavior. Was an experiment and I think that in my future i will use more often bulck HDD/SDD (especially SSD) becouse I understand the warranty and the premium HW that HP rebrand vbut I cannot (read I don't want) afford to pay 500€ for 240GB SSD in 2016!

  • To my understanding the Proliant gen9 servers are more forgiving with third party drives if you compare with gen8 so that's perhaps why you have had success?

I just successfully installed a ADATA SP900 and a Kingston V300 in a HP DL380 G6 having a P410i controller. the are both based on a SandForce 2281 ontroller. The temperature of the drives is reported correctly.
