For fun I've been working with a web server on my OS X(10.8.4). Apache and its httpd.conf(/etc/apache2/) file and username.conf(/etc/apache2/users/) files all seem to be fine, I can access my localhost from within any computer within my LAN(just need to type in my internal(or external) ip). However I would like to temporarily access my server for the next few days outside of my network(like how one would access any website)....

So I forwarded port 80 on my router(Asus RT-AC66U, using TCP), and apache's httpd.conf file has listen 80.

My username.conf file if it's applicable(just typing in the ip does not load this page[instead 'It works' text will pop up] typing /~username will):

However after restarting and starting the server several times, and using listen xxx.xxx.x.xxx:80 on the config file as well, along with turning firewalls on and off on both my mac os x and router, using online port checking sites(along with accessing it outside the LAN) port 80 is still closed and the website does not load.

I tried curl 'http://localhost:80' and curl -v 'http://localhost:4567/' to make sure there were no problems on my side, and they both displayed the html contents of the pages without any problem.

If it matters I can also ftp into my server and transfer/set permissions of files/folders without any problems.

How can I access my external IP successfully outside of my LAN?

Whats more than likely the issue is your internet service provider has blocked port 80. There are ways around this. But fist let's verify that is not a server or firewall issue.

The fastest way to figure out if this is an issue with your firewall or router is to change the port forwarding on your router to forward a non standard, unused external port to port 80 on your Apache server and port 80 on your apache server to the non standard, unused external port. Try to visit your external IP via that port (example using port 8080: http:// 1.2.3.4:8080) if you can now browse your site normally this means that your ISP is blocking traffic to port 80. this is the case most of the time when using a home network.

To solve your issue would require using a dynamic DNS server which allows for directing domain names to non standard ports. or just use http:yourip:port

I port forwarded 8080 and set apache to listen 8080 in the httpd.conf file, however while it loads normally within my LAN the port is closed/not loading normally outside of it/otherwise. –  user2801011 Sep 21 '13 at 1:07
    
what is the address you are trying to visit from external sources? make sure it is the ip that is assinged to you via your ISP. whatsmyip.org will tell you the external Ip you must visit. if you try to visit the site like your internal browsing ex 192.168.0.1 from an external source it won't work –  Richard Christensen Sep 21 '13 at 1:18
