Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

WARNING: Must like a challenge since this seems like it could be a multi layer problem.

  • Windows 2003 r2
  • IIS6
  • Exchange 2007 SP1 upgraded to SP3 with CU11
  • vmware virtualized (Microsoft won't spend more than an hour with me)
  • ActiveSync is working thankfully OWA logon page isn't shown, instead it's a logon box (IIS permission setting I figure)
  • 1 server holds all Exchange roles
  • 1 DC
  • vmware virtualized (Microsoft won't spend more than an hour with me)

Steps taken

Reboots, Reset OWA virtual directory, Adjusting IIS permissions, iisreset, Calls to Microsoft.

A long time ago I dismounted and removed the public folder since it wasn't in use. I created a new PF after seeing some errors about that. I don't know if that's relevant.

 Event ID 65
An error occurred while the Outlook Web Access configuration settings were being loaded. Virtual directory: "owa". Web site: "Default Web Site".
 Error message:
"Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

 OWAauth.dll was giving an error
 Event ID 2268
Could not load all ISAPI filters for site/service. Therefore startup aborted.
 Event ID 2214
The HTTP Filter DLL C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\owa\auth\owaauth.dll failed to load. The data is the error.

I removed Exchange OWA Cookie Authentication ISAPI Filter from IIS and that error stopped.
this site (http://blog.misthos.com/2009/09/outlook-anywhere-fails-after-exchange.html) had information on owaauth.dll but that didn't make a difference for me.
