I am currently documenting the specifications to purchase IBM x3650 M4 server. I am going for two Quad core Intel Xeon E5-2609, 2.4 GHz, 10 MB cache and 16GB PC3L-10600 CL9 ECC DDR3 1333MHz LP RDIMM.

I have finalized most of my specifications, however, I have some doubts regarding the memory. I came across some documents and info on the web that states that we should use a combination of 1Rx4 and 2Rx4 RAM but there are no exact details about it.

I'm speculating whether to go for 4GB 1Rx4 & 4GB 2Rx4 for each processor or 8GB 2Rx4 for each processor.

Could someone let me know how to go about distributing the 16 GB RAM between the two processor and how to combine 1R and 2R RAM for the same.

Your IBM reseller or IBM itself would be a good start. Have you spoken to them? –  Dave M Oct 21 '13 at 12:28
