Linux Host(IP-10.0.0.10) is connected through a switch. Switch is connected to two routers(R1_IP-10.0.0.1 and R2_IP-10.0.0.2). These routers are a part of our private network. I have set two default gateways through command route add default gw 10.0.0.1 and route add default gateway gw 10.0.0.2. When R1 gateway goes down host should use R2 gateway. Is this possible? If possible how to reduce switch time from selecting one gateway to other gateway. my observation...when one router goes down host continuously send ARP to the same gateway rather than switch to other gateway.Routers do not support VRRP and HSRP.

You could set up a vrrp virtual ip between the two routers and use that as the gateway. –  Jure1873 Nov 23 '13 at 19:23
