I am on CentOS 6 with Postfix, Dovecot, and PostfixAdmin. I have configured an external domain with the user me@domain.com as a virtual user. It's receiving mail without a problem at /home/vmail/me@domain.com/Maildir/

I am trying to install Squirrelmail to check that mailbox. I manually downloaded, installed, and configured Squirrelmail. If i try to login from Squirrelmail as me@domain.com, I get the error Unknown user or password incorrect. When the login fails, the relevant logfiles are as follows:

/var/log/maillog
dovecot: auth: mysql: Connected to localhost (postfix)
dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<me@domain.com>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured

/var/log/secure
auth: pam_unix(dovecot:auth): check pass; user unknown
auth: pam_unix(dovecot:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=dovecot ruser=me@domain.com rhost=127.0.0.1
auth: pam_succeed_if(dovecot:auth): error retrieving information about user me@domain.com

The interesting thing is that SquirrelMail will let me login as a local user (such as root) without a problem.

How can I get SquirrelMail to let me login as a virtual user?
