Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Or to rephrase my question: what factors could affect TTFB for static content when using nginx? Specifically, Time To First Byte excluding SSL or DNS overhead.

I can imagine gzip level (gzip_comp_level 5) and cpu performance (load <0.1) being the main factors here, but is 140ms TTFB for 10KB javascript file ok? How about 200ms TTFB with 300KB javascript? I have no reference to consult with.

We use simple try_files and configs from h5bp, I wonder if there are tuning we can add to make our current TTFB shorter.
