Is it just me or is the Windows Server 2012 backup really shady? I have a single Windows Server 2012 R2 with 2 Hyper-V Guests (1 Windows 7 Pro and 1 Small Business Server 2011).
From the reading that I have done, there is no clear guidance on how the backup should be done. Microsoft documents that best practice should be to backup the Hyper-V guests natively, then backup the Windows Server 2012 R2 as well. This sounds good at first blush, but in practice it would be prohibitively expensive as it would
- triple my storage requirements (Guest OS Backups, Hyper-V Backup, vhdx backups)
- backups can only be scheduled daily
- Backup Target is a NAS over SMB so maintaining multiple backups is not possible.
has anyone solved this predicament without buying thousands of dollars worth of backup tools? It's almost like Microsoft Doesn't want us to backup to anything but a 10TB USB disk.
