Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I don't know if this best place to pose this problem, but here goes.

I am trying to install Sql Server 2012 Developer Edition on my Windows 7 64-bit workstation, and keep getting a failure to install certain parts of it:

  • Reporting Services - Native
  • Database Engine Services
  • Data Quality Services
  • Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search
  • Sql Server Replication

The error I get for each of these is "Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed." The error code for all of them is 0x851A001A.

The frustrating part of this is that I am invited to check the Sql Server error log for potential causes. The log is inaccessible - I can't open any file there.

This is happening on a new workstation. My old workstation, likewise W7-64Bit, had no problem installed SqlServer 2012.
