I was having difficulty restarting Apache on Ubuntu.

I tried sudo netstat -ltnp | grep ':80'

I get: tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 31855/httpd

if I run sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

I get:
* Restarting web server apache2 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs Action 'start' failed. The Apache error log may have more information.

I'm confused because the webpage was working but then sudo service apache2 status it says Apache2 is NOT running.

I then run sudo kill -9 31855 and then /etc/init.d/apache2 restart and now Apache restarts fine.

The problem is now my entire site is down. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here? I'm also using bitnami. Thanks here is httpd.conf file:

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/access_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache2/logs/access_log", whereas "/logs/access_log"
# will be interpreted as '/logs/access_log'.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to specify a local disk on the
# Mutex directive, if file-based mutexes are used. If you wish to share the
# same ServerRoot for multiple httpd daemons, you will need to change at
# least PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/opt/bitnami/apache2"

#
# Mutex: Allows you to set the mutex mechanism and mutex file directory
# for individual mutexes, or change the global defaults
#
# Uncomment and change the directory if mutexes are file-based and the default
# mutex file directory is not on a local disk or is not appropriate for some
# other reason.
#
# Mutex default:logs
ServerName localhost
#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

You've got more than one webserver running on that machine. It could be two separate installs of apache, or it could be apache and nginx, etc.

Either way, the apache install you restarted, is NOT what was serving your website.

Ok thanks, I stopped apache. Then I ran sudo apachectl start and now the site is back up. Im pretty new to this pretty confused why I have two versions of apache one listed as httpd and one as apache2. Its running on the httpd, Im assuming its better to run it on the apache2 but maybe it doesnt matter. Is it worth me trying to configure to the apache2 one?

  • You obviously got apache from two different sources. Maybe installed via bitnami and via the ubuntu repos? or one built from source, one from the repos? And to answer your question, you should keep what youre already using. Aug 12, 2014 at 20:58
