Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a problem with one user of my network: whenever he runs an app from a network share (from a Windows Server 2012 R2, but this happened also before with a Windows Server 2008 R2) even after closing the app (or even killing it from Task Manager) the files are kept opened, and I can't overwrite them until I close the files manually within the Server Shared Folders | Opened Files (my translation, I'm not sure how that is displayed exactly on English).

This happens only with this user, which doesn't have as far as I can see anything special on it's properties.

Any idea of where to begin looking for a cause? The OS of the user is Windows 7 SP 1, and as far as I can see there is no special or strange apps running.

What is holding the file open? Try handle.exe or process explorer (from SysInternals Suite) to find out. –  gtirloni Sep 6 '14 at 22:15
