We have some interesting problems with memory upgrades on old (circa 2005) server boxes. What I have seen is that DDR1 Registered could be compatible with DDR1 Unbuffered, on some hardware, but not on some other. However, searching for documentation about that hasn't been successfull, so, the question :

What are the various RAM kinds and how are they different ? I'd like to know why the above example happens, and if there is a solution or something. What is Registered/Unbuffered, ECC, non-ECC, CL4, CL5, are these technologies compatibles or not ?

(note : my English is not good enough, please, if you understand what I want, feel free to reformulate...)

Many server motherboards require Registered, and won't work with anything else. It sucks, because Registered is many times more expensive. – Paul Tomblin Nov 2 '09 at 12:21
Your English is perfect. But why did you make this question community wiki? – Dennis Williamson Nov 2 '09 at 13:21
why not ? I was searching a page or something with that kind of informations. Since there was none, I thought that it would be of interest for more persons than only me. – edomaur Nov 2 '09 at 13:59
@Paul Tomblin : in my example, it was the complete reverse... Unbuffered, but not Registered... (Sunfire X2100, 2005 model) – edomaur Nov 2 '09 at 14:00
Community wiki is for subjective questions and the like. – Dennis Williamson Nov 2 '09 at 15:01

Just use crucial.com's memory finder - just select the server and look at what options are available. I'm not saying you have to buy from them but their lookup system is a great place to start.
