Anyone know of any clones of PerlDesk or somethng similar? I'm looking for a support portal but we can't pay ;)

If that's not possible I could do it in Wordpress or Drupal but I don't want to go that route.

Update to responses below
Can't install OTRS as our host doest allow CPAN installation.

Can't you do a local CPAN install? If you're able to open the CPAN shell (perl -MCPAN -e shell) then you're able to do run locally installed CPAN libs – Michael Pobega Nov 5 '09 at 18:13
I can open the CPAN shell, but as soon as i try to install something I get an out of memory error. The hosting co support says I need a dedicated server. – shaiss Nov 5 '09 at 18:18

I don't know of any PerlDesk clones (especially as I've never used PerlDesk), however there are a number of excellent Help Desk Support/Ticket Tracking tools and applications available.

My personal preference is Best Practical's RT (Request Tracker). Its primary interface for users is via e-mail, so they don't have to worry about the tool involved. To open a ticket, they send an e-mail to a support address, and a ticket is automatically created. A web interface is also available for users, and is used by support personnel.

RT is Open Source, and actively developed.

Others you might want to check out include OTRS, and possibly some of the more developer oriented bug tracking systems like Bugzilla. They can be used for issue tracking, although not all excel at it.

I've heard lots about RT, but can't get it to compile on our hosting server. – shaiss Nov 5 '09 at 18:18

Have a look at Open Ticket Request System. It's very powerfull, can be connected to mailservers and it is free. But you can also get (payed) support.

I found OTRS singularly horrible to use. – Cian Nov 5 '09 at 18:30
What exactly was that 'horrible'? The configuration with the Config.pm is not that easy as it is in M$s operation systems and the webfrontend will not win a design award, but in my opinion OTRS(especial with the ITSM-extension) is a very powerfull and robust tool. – mke Nov 6 '09 at 8:15
I tend to install the required perl packages via the systems paketmanager ... – mke Nov 6 '09 at 14:27
