i was just wondering what typs of servers would be needed to host an online search engine? i mean, a search engine as big as google? what are the specs that would be required to run/maintain a similar sesarch service on a server(s)?

Google released some information about their infrastructure. You can find a quick overview on Wikipedia and more detailed information through links provided in the Wikipedia article. It's very interesting. I read a whole bunch of papers a few months ago.

Well your looking at of 400,000 servers, in 10 Data Centers around the globe, with the staff to maintain and support these.

Googles infrastructure is based on using lots of (relatively) small and cheap servers, rather than buying less, huge multi-million dollar behemoths. They are easy to setup, link into the platform, and remove again if they break down, which with that many machines I imagine happens fairly regularly.
