I have a dedicated server in the US. Of course the server provider offers lots of MSSQL Plans to install on the server. But I'm short on money so what happens if I install a cracked version on my server? Will Microsoft to find out?

This is a sysadmin question!!!!!!!!!! – eavar Dec 14 '09 at 17:34
@eavar, Ask your lawyers about 'legal' questions, not system admins. – Zoredache Dec 14 '09 at 17:49

Disagree with closing .. we aren't lawyers or police, and a "what happens" question is legit otherwise. – tomjedrz Dec 14 '09 at 19:05

@tomjedrz: As a community of responsible sysadmins, we cannot condone, support or tolerate the pirating of software. and this guy has strait out said he is going to pirate a piece of software. So "What'll happen if i install a pirated piece of software" is most definatly not sysadmin related. And the only proper answer if there must be an answer is "Don't do it" – Zypher Dec 14 '09 at 22:09

I had mixed feelings about voting to close this one, but particularly because it IS somewhat of a sysadmin question. The problem is the context of the question: "In what kind of legal problem will I get if I do this?" - that's more of a legal or ethical issue (perhaps there should be a category for that in closing a question). What I mean is, if you KNOW it’s illegal, then the question of “Can I get away with it?” shouldn’t be accepted in this website. – l0c0b0x Dec 14 '09 at 22:16

Questions on Server Fault are expected to generally relate to servers, networking, or desktop infrastructure, within the scope defined in the faq.

Should they ever find out, your server might be terminated and you could get sued. There is MSSQL Express which is free, with certain database limitations which you could use, and in the event this cost is so big you may want to switch to a free alternative such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.

Agreed, there really is no reason to use a cracked version of MSSQL. Express edition and MYSQL are all available for free and if you site warrants the features of a full blown MSSQL server then you should be able to afford paying for it, or even pay to use your hosts shared server. – Sam Dec 14 '09 at 17:32
