We've been having trouble with Backup Exec 10d as described in http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/280671.htm, and following the recommended course of action installed KB940349. Upon attempting a reboot as required, the server begins booting (the progress bar starts scrolling), but after a few seconds the server reboots.

Attempting to boot into safe mode results in similar behavior: the usual list of drivers, etc. scroll by until it reaches 'acpitabl.dat', at which point the server pauses for a few seconds and then reboots.

Loading "Last known good configuration" does not produce different results.

Any ideas?

Do a google search on "acpitabl.dat reboots". Looks like other people have had similar problems that have lead them to try a number of things including chkdsks, repairs, and reinstalls. See eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/28004092/… – Sim Dec 15 '09 at 5:09
I think I've narrowed down the problem to one of the hard disks (the server was using software raid). That the reboot was unsuccessful after the KB install seems to have been a red herring, though I've got my work cut out for me to prove it and get the server back up to 100%. I'll post an answer here after all is said and done, as well as update the question so that it more appropriately describes the problem. – jobu1324 Dec 15 '09 at 5:54
